Meet the Owners!
Hello and welcome to We Rock the Spectrum – Lake Charles! My name is Katy Miller and I have been working with special needs children for the past 11 years; it is my passion. While attending graduate school at McNeese State University, I worked as a para in an autism setting at St. John Elementary. Upon graduating from McNeese State with a master’s in Special Education, mild/moderate, grades K-12, my husband, Jason, and I moved to Spring, TX for his career in the oil and gas industry. There, I began working at The Arbor School, focusing on Applied Behavior Analysis. I was then blessed to be hired by Klein ISD as a middle school developmental teacher at Krimmel Intermediate. During the three years I worked at Krimmel, I had the honor of working with a variety of students on the spectrum, as well as students with a variety of abilities. With the many sensory areas set up in the classroom, a built-in life-skills curriculum, necessary accommodations, and multiple opportunities to go on community based instruction field trips; we were able to create a meaningful environment both in the class and in the community.
In November 2014, my husband and I welcomed our son, Griffin, into the world. After much thought and conversation, we moved back to Lake Charles, Louisiana so Griffin could grow up around family and get to experience everything we did while growing up in the south. After moving back, I was hired by The Diocese of Lake Charles to create the Progressions Program at The Immaculate Conception Cathedral School. While there, I was able to set up a classroom environment tailored for children on the spectrum, as well as students with other special needs. After two years of getting the program up and running, I was able to go back to where it all started in Calcasieu Parish: St. John Elementary. Here, I am a special education teacher in an autism classroom, providing meaningful instruction, life-experiences, and getting my students ready for the real world.
Being able to experience teaching across different settings and environments, it was clear that no matter what abilities each student had, they all shared a common need: sensory input. To keep the students engaged and focused, they each required their own level of sensory input and output. Providing that frequently throughout the school day using sensory breaks, fine motor and gross motor activities, and their own unstructured playtime, helped each student excel and grow.
How did this all lead me to We Rock the Spectrum? It was book, a fellow special education teacher, and an understanding for these sensory needs for children in our community. When working for The Diocese of Lake Charles, I saw a huge need for inclusion of all children as well as a better understanding of our kiddos that are on the spectrum. This lead me to write a book called Under the Umbrella: Sam’s Sister. A fellow special education teacher in Texas heard about this book and wanted to put it in her gym; We Rock the Spectrum. The second I started reading about this amazing gym, I knew this is where I needed to be and what Lake Charles needed. After showing my husband and explaining to him every amazing aspect of We Rock, he was sold, too. The gym allows me to service our community in a way that will include all children, let me share my passion, and build a family-oriented environment for all. That is what this gym is, a place you feel right at home, a family. With my husband’s support, support from family and friends, and the We Rock family, this gym will be something we cherish forever. Not only are growing with the We Rock family, our own family has grown, too. We welcomed our daughter, Nora, in August 2017; new adventures around every corner.
The Gym offers a safe, family-friendly environment that is fun for children of all abilities. With my professional knowledge of children of a variety of abilities, raising children of my own, and the many needs offered by We Rock the Spectrum; your child is guaranteed to learn and grow at the Gym. I look forward to welcoming you to We Rock the Spectrum Gym-Lake Charles. Your child will enter a world uniquely created just for them.
